The mention of a possible “Ultra” branding is also significant. Apple has previously used the MacBook Ultra name for a premium tier with faster processors and arguably better cooling. In this context, the report suggests that after the OLED models appear, mini-LED MacBook Pro models will continue to be sold for some time, possibly until at least 2028. 2028 and 2029: The final stretch

The report lists an early 2028 update for the iPad Air, again with 11-inch and 13-inch OLED panels and 60Hz. If that happens about a year after the first OLED iPad Air, it would likely be a minor refresh meant to adopt a newer OLED panel generation rather than a major redesign. The refresh could bring improved calibration, better peak brightness, or slight battery gains. For buyers, the early 2027 and early 2028 iPad Air updates are a reminder that Apple intends to keep the product cycle moving quickly.

In 2029, the report calls for a new 13.6-inch MacBook with OLED, LTPO, and COE. Color-on-encapsulation is an OLED technique that places a red, green, and blue color filter on top of a thin-film encapsulation layer. By doing this instead of using a polarizer, manufacturers retain the protective encapsulation while improving light transmittance. In practice, products with COE tend to require less energy to achieve the same brightness, and the panel itself can be made thinner. Both are valuable for Apple’s desire to make increasingly compact Macs and iPads.

What the missing products say

The absence of the so-called MacBook Neo from the reported display roadmap is telling. The MacBook Neo has been rumored as a lower-cost MacBook that could take the place of the current entry-level MacBook Air. Because display upgrades are expensive, Apple might wait several years before introducing a new product with an OLED panel if it needs to keep the bill of materials low. The same logic may explain why base model iPads are not included in the roadmap. Apple’s cheapest iPads carry margins that could suffer if they were forced to adopt OLED. Historically, the entry-level iPad has survived with older display technology to keep prices down, and the report suggests that trend will continue.

Those omissions do not necessarily mean MacBook Neo or the base iPad are canceled. It simply means that their displays are not likely to be upgraded until after the premium and mid-range products move to OLED. For Apple, delaying OLED on budget products allows display suppliers to improve yields and lower component costs, which also allows Apple to eventually deliver an OLED MacBook or iPad at a more accessible price.

Chip speculation and what to watch next

The report also mentions an M5 Ultra chip option for the OLED MacBook Pro and MacBook Ultra arriving in late 2026.
