A 3D-printed case for a minimalist e-reader has become the center of a heated debate about the future of firearm regulation and digital creativity. The device, created by Louisville, Kentucky-based maker Luke Blackford, is a plastic shell designed to hold an Xteink X4 e-reader, but it is molded into the shape of a handgun. While the case cannot shoot bullets and its trigger does nothing, its mere appearance has sparked questions about how authorities might regulate 3D printing in an age of increasingly sophisticated ghost guns.

The Gundle: A Provocative Creation

Blackford, who goes by Luke The Maker online, printed the case using a Bambu Lab H2D printer. The design process took less than 24 hours from conception to physical object. He downloaded a free 3D model of a handgun frame, imported it into Fusion 360, and added a slot for the X4 e-reader. The result is a bizarre hybrid: a traditional-looking pistol grip and slide, with a small e-reader screen sitting on top. In promotional videos, Blackford flips through pages of Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian and J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye while holding the case, then tosses it into his car's center console. Text overlays read: “The perfect e-reader for public reading.”

Despite its harmless function, Blackford has not taken the device into public spaces. He acknowledges that carrying an object that closely resembles a real firearm could lead to dangerous misunderstandings with law enforcement or other citizens. He printed the case in black, but says he would use a different color if he ever did bring it out. The 2014 death of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old shot by police for holding a toy gun, remains a stark reminder of how easily such mistakes can turn fatal. According to a 2016 Washington Post analysis, police shot and killed 86 people over two years who were holding realistic-looking toy weapons, pellet guns, or airsoft guns.

The Push for Gun-Blocking Software

Blackford’s creation arrives as lawmakers in several states push for mandatory gun-blocking software on all new 3D printers. New York and California have already passed legislation requiring manufacturers to implement technology that scans any file before printing and automatically halts the process if it detects a firearm or firearm part. New York’s law, signed by Governor Kathy Hochul in late 2025, tasks a panel of industry experts with determining the technical feasibility of such scans. California’s version has passed the state assembly and awaits further action. Similar bills are being considered in Illinois, Oregon, and Washington.

Proponents argue that the software is necessary to close enforcement gaps around ghost guns—untraceable firearms often made with 3D printers. In 2024, the NYPD reported recovering 109 mostly 3D-printed guns from crime scenes, up from just one three years earlier. A report from the gun control advocacy group Everytown found similar increases in 20 other cities. Governor Hochul has called the phenomenon a “plastic pipeline,” warning that criminals can now manufacture weapons in their own homes, bypassing traditional background checks and serial number requirements.

However, critics, including digital rights organizations like the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), question both the effectiveness and the unintended consequences of such mandates. Clifford Braun, associate director of technology policy at the EFF, notes that the current detection technology exists only in “limited form.” Two main approaches are being considered: hash-based detection and AI-driven geometric analysis. Hash-based systems compare a file’s digital fingerprint against a database of known gun blueprints. This method is easy to defeat by making slight modifications to the design—changing a screw hole or adjusting the curve of the grip. AI-based systems, on the other hand, analyze the object’s geometry and decide whether it looks enough like a gun to warrant blocking. This approach is prone to false positives, especially for items like water hoses, power tools, toy guns, and—as Blackford’s case demonstrates—artistic props that happen to share a silhouette with a firearm.

The Technical Challenge

Dartmouth College associate professor Solomon Diamond, who specializes in additive manufacturing and geometric identification, explains that the real dilemma lies in balancing false positives against false negatives. “Basing blocking tech on visual resemblance is where the false positive concerns arise because a prop and a real functional firearm resemble one another,” Diamond told The Verge. He noted that a more precise method called “geometric identification” could potentially distinguish between a gun barrel and a tube, or a trigger guard and a handle, without relying on overall shape. But this technology is still emerging and has not been deployed for consumer 3D printers. Even if it were, regulating its use would require a level of technical sophistication that many small printer manufacturers lack.

Blackford himself is skeptical of any mandatory blocking software. “I’m not for that kind of thing because I’m big into open software,” he says. “It’s just a wild frontier right now, so I definitely don’t trust that kind of tech now.” He believes that anyone determined to print a gun will find a workaround—using a VPN, modifying the printer’s firmware, or simply using an older model not subject to the law. “Some companies are going to be putting those locks in place, but I think open-source software is always going to prevail,” he adds. His own design files for the Gundle are hosted on his personal website, with a clear warning that they should not be used irresponsibly. He deliberately avoided popular marketplaces like Thingiverse or Printables to limit the spread, though the files remain accessible to anyone who searches for them.

Creativity and Free Expression at Stake

The broad implications of gun-blocking mandates extend beyond firearms themselves. Hobbyists, cosplayers, prop makers, and educators regularly print objects that resemble weapons: movie replicas, historical models, even abstract art that might trigger an AI scan. A hobbyist printing a toy lightsaber hilt or a model of a medieval sword could find their printer halted if the software misidentifies the shape. As Braun from the EFF warns, “If you’re going to try and block all of those wonderfully creative humans, you’re going to make it very hard to print props or make social commentary.”

The legal landscape adds another layer of complexity. Federal law already mandates that toy guns and look-alike firearms feature a blaze-orange tip on the muzzle to distinguish them from real weapons. However, the Gundle does not have such a marking, and it is not technically a toy or a fake gun—it is an art project. Blackford could potentially face legal trouble if he carried it in public, but the law is ambiguous. The ATF’s 2022 rule clarifying what counts as a firearm frame or receiver further complicates matters: handgun frames are visually similar to many non-firearm objects, making identification harder than for long-gun receivers.

Some gun rights advocates argue that the real threat of 3D-printed guns is overstated. The majority of ghost guns used in crimes are still made from milling kits or parts kits, not fully printed on a home printer. Printers also require considerable skill and time to produce a functional weapon; as Blackford puts it, “3D printing is too much of a pain in the ass” compared to buying a conventional firearm. However, the NYPD’s increasing recovery numbers suggest that the problem is growing, even if it remains a fraction of total gun seizures (over 5,200 illegal guns in New York City in 2025 alone).

Ultimately, Blackford’s Gundle serves as a perfect stress test for the proposed regulation. It is not a gun, but it looks exactly like one. A hash-based system would miss it entirely; an AI-based system might block it. The experts tasked with setting the standards will have to decide whether to prioritize catching illegal firearms at the cost of punishing innocent creativity, or to allow more guns to slip through to avoid censorship. No matter which choice they make, the case of the e-reader that looks like a gun will stand as a symbol of the unwinnable trade-offs inherent in trying to police a technology that champions freedom and modification.
