L'acteur sud-coréen Kim Soo Hyun dans la controverse après le suicide de l'actrice Kim Sae Ron

The entertainment industry in South Korea is reeling from a series of explosive allegations following the tragic suicide of actress Kim Sae Ron, who was found dead at her Seoul home on February 16, 2025. At the center of the controversy is Kim Soo Hyun, the country's highest-paid actor, accused of having entered into a romantic relationship with Kim Sae Ron when she was just 15 years old and he was 27. The allegations, first aired by a YouTube channel known for its far-right leanings and previous convictions for fake news, have triggered a wave of public outrage, leading to major brands terminating their contracts with the actor.

The story began on March 10, when the channel claimed to have evidence that Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Sae Ron had maintained a secret relationship for six years. According to the channel, the relationship started in 2015, when Kim Sae Ron was a minor, and lasted until 2021. The actor's agency, Goldmedalist, initially dismissed the claims as entirely false and malicious. However, as more information surfaced, including private messages and photographs, the agency was forced to adjust its stance.

Kim Sae Ron was a child star who debuted at the age of nine in the critically acclaimed film "A Brand New Life," which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. She went on to star in successful projects such as "The Man from Nowhere" and "A Girl at My Door," earning a reputation as a talented young actress. Her career, however, took a downturn after she was involved in a drunk driving accident in 2022, which led to her contract with Goldmedalist being terminated. Following the accident, she struggled to find work and faced mounting financial pressure.

Kim Soo Hyun, on the other hand, rose to fame through hit dramas like "Dream High" (2011), "Moon Embracing the Sun" (2012), and "It's Okay to Not Be Okay" (2020). His international fame skyrocketed with the Netflix series "Queen of Tears" in 2024, making him a household name worldwide. Before the controversy, he had endorsement deals with numerous global brands, including Prada, whose contract was terminated "by mutual agreement" on March 14.

The YouTube channel's initial allegations were met with skepticism, but subsequent revelations from local media outlets added weight to the claims. In particular, a major Korean investigative outlet published what it said were text messages sent by Kim Sae Ron to Kim Soo Hyun in March 2024, pleading for help with a debt of 700 million won (approximately $530,000) that she owed to Goldmedalist. The debt stemmed from the damages incurred during her 2022 accident, which the agency had initially covered on her behalf. In the messages, Kim Sae Ron wrote: "Oppa, it's Sae Ron. I received the certification letter today, saying [your company] is suing me. You said you would give me time, so I've been working hard, preparing for my comeback. But if you suddenly ask for 700 million won right away, there's really nothing I can do. Please save me. Give me some time."

Kim Soo Hyun allegedly did not respond to these pleas, and the debt remained a source of stress for the actress until her death. Goldmedalist, however, disputed this narrative. In a statement released on March 14, the agency confirmed that a romantic relationship did exist between the two stars, but only from the summer of 2019 to the autumn of 2020, when Kim Sae Ron was an adult. They claimed that all photographs and correspondence from that period were taken with consent and that the letters were merely friendly in nature. The agency also insisted that the debt issue had been resolved a year prior, stating that they had classified the 700 million won as a bad debt and never demanded repayment. They accused the YouTube channel of fabricating a causal link between the debt and Kim Sae Ron's suicide.

Despite the agency's defense, public opinion remains sharply divided. Many netizens have expressed sympathy for Kim Sae Ron, pointing out the power imbalance in her relationship with Kim Soo Hyun, who was both older and more established. Others have criticized the agency for what they see as a delayed and inconsistent response to the allegations. The controversy has also reignited discussions about the harsh pressures faced by young celebrities in South Korea's fiercely competitive entertainment industry.

Kim Sae Ron's suicide date coincided with Kim Soo Hyun's birthday, adding a layer of tragedy to the story. Friends and former colleagues have described her as having struggled emotionally after the accident, unable to secure acting projects and burdened by debt. Her death has sparked calls for better mental health support for entertainers, as well as stricter regulations on dating and contractual relationships between agencies and their clients.

The fallout for Kim Soo Hyun has been immediate. In addition to losing the Prada endorsement, several other brands have dropped him, and his upcoming projects are now in jeopardy. The actor's agency acknowledged that he is suffering from severe psychological distress, describing his state as one of extreme confusion. It remains to be seen whether the controversy will permanently damage his career, which before the accusations was at its zenith.

The YouTube channel that broke the story has been accused of having a political agenda, but its revelations have forced the industry to confront uncomfortable questions about the treatment of young talents. As the investigation continues, Goldmedalist has promised to present further evidence to clear Kim Soo Hyun's name, but the damage to his reputation may already be irreversible.
