Qui est Ice Spice, la nouvelle star du rap adoubée par Nicki Minaj et Taylor Swift?

It is nearly impossible to have missed Ice Spice's distinctive orange afro in recent months. With her nonchalant flow and captivating style, the rapper from the Bronx has, in just one year, established herself as one of the essential emerging artists on the international music scene.

At 23 years old, Ice Spice sits at the top of the charts. She has secured prestigious collaborations with Taylor Swift, PinkPantheress, and even her childhood idol Nicki Minaj—all while having released only a single EP, Like..?, on January 20, 2023. Her appeal extends beyond the United States; she performed on the main stage of Belgium's Les Ardentes festival in Liège, a testament to her global draw. This article delves into her remarkable ascent.

Early Life and Musical Roots

Born Isis Gaston in the Bronx, New York, Ice Spice grew up as one of five siblings. Her father, a former underground African-American rapper, immersed her in music and hip-hop from a very young age. By the age of seven, Ice Spice had developed a passion for hip-hop culture and began writing her first lyrics—poems inspired by one of her early role models: Nicki Minaj.

“My father introduced me to Nicki when I was very young. She was the first female rapper I ever saw, and I immediately knew that this was what I wanted to do with my life,” Ice Spice told Billboard in an interview. Her early admiration for Minaj would later culminate in a dream collaboration.

To support her five siblings, Ice Spice initially prioritized education over music. She pursued a business degree at SUNY Purchase in New York, where she also played volleyball. On campus, she befriended Riot USA, a rap enthusiast who would become her producer. Riot USA recalled, “She would send me snippets of her music, and I thought it sounded really good—she had a voice with bass and depth. She had the potential to go far.”

Constantly in the studio with Riot USA, Ice Spice gradually drifted away from her coursework. In 2021, she made the decision to pursue music full-time, adopting the stage name Ice Spice—a combination of her childhood nickname “Ice” and her love for spicy food.

Viral Breakthrough on TikTok

Ice Spice’s first taste of fame came through a TikTok challenge. While working on her debut single with Riot USA, she participated in the Buss It Challenge, where participants film themselves in casual clothes before cutting to a more dressed-up, sexy outfit while dancing to Erica Banks' song “Buss It.” Her video went viral.

Capitalizing on the newfound attention, Ice Spice released her debut single “Munch (Feelin' U)” on August 10, 2022. The track adopted the drill sound with a feminine twist and immediately resonated with listeners. TikTok once again proved a powerful tool: the song was used in over 500,000 videos on the platform. “Munch (Feelin' U)” also entered the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop chart and currently has over 45 million views on YouTube.

Rapid Rise and Major Collaborations

After this initial exposure, everything accelerated for Ice Spice. Drake reached out to express his admiration and invited her to one of his parties in Toronto. Beyoncé selected her as one of the faces of her Ivy Park clothing line. Lil Nas X even dressed as her for Halloween. In September 2022, she signed with Capitol Records and 10K Projects, the label home to artists like Trippie Redd and 6ix9ine.

To prove she was not a one-hit wonder, Ice Spice released her debut EP, Like..?, in January 2023. The project exuded female empowerment and a bold “bad bitch” attitude. Shortly after, she teamed up with British artist PinkPantheress, another TikTok sensation, for “Boy's a liar Pt. 2.” The hyper-pop, early-2000s inspired track became a viral hit and secured Ice Spice her first Top 3 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

Dubbed the “new princess of rap” by American media, Ice Spice then achieved a lifelong dream: a collaboration with Nicki Minaj on the song “Princess Diana,” a nod to her fans' nickname for her as the “Lady Diana of Generation Z.” The track reinforced her status as a rising force.

On an even larger scale, Taylor Swift invited Ice Spice to remix “Karma” from her album Midnights. Swift brought her on stage during the Eras Tour and the collaboration was met with widespread acclaim. Ice Spice also attended the Met Gala and appeared in a campaign for Kim Kardashian's shapewear brand Skims.

The 'Industry Plant' Controversy

With sudden fame comes scrutiny. Ice Spice has been accused of being an “industry plant”—a term used to describe artists who appear to come from nowhere but whose success is actually orchestrated by behind-the-scenes teams. YouTuber Khal Ali released a video analyzing her rise, stating, “The question is her so-called organic ascent, which is surprising. She went from anonymity to featuring with Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj.” He added, “There's a lot of mystery around who she is. Researching her background yields very little, few childhood photos, and little info about her entourage and team.”

Many online argue that Ice Spice's success was not spontaneous and was entirely engineered by her label. Some even claim she was already signed when she posted her Buss It Challenge in 2021. In response, Ice Spice told Teen Vogue, “I'm not an industry plant. They just say that because they're mad that I'm rising faster than their favorite artist. I know how I got here, and I know how hard I worked.”

Despite the controversy, her trajectory shows no signs of slowing down. She contributed to the soundtrack of Greta Gerwig's highly anticipated Barbie movie alongside Nicki Minaj. When asked about her future, she told The Guardian, “I'm ready to try every opportunity that comes my way. I'm young, I want to try everything.”

Ice Spice's rapid rise is a testament to her unique style, savvy use of social media, and undeniable talent. From writing poems inspired by Nicki Minaj at age seven to sharing a stage with her idol and collaborating with pop royalty, her story is one of determination and strategic career moves. Whether the 'industry plant' label holds any weight remains debatable, but her music continues to resonate with millions worldwide.
